On September 7-10, 2022, the Photography Museum organizes the International Symposium on Old Photographic Technologies. In order to mobilise the forces of memory institutions to address the most burning problems of preservation of photographic heritage, to promote the dialogue on relevant issues, exchange of experience and best practice solutions among specialists in various fields, the symposium organisers invite photography researchers, museum professionals, archivists, restorers, practitioners of old photography techniques from Lithuania and abroad to participate and share their experiences.

Since the moment of inventing technologies to capture the photographic image, it has become an important means of documentation, communication and artistic expression of personal and collective history. The improving digital technologies have displaced the expensive and incomparably more time-consuming and knowledge-intensive photochemical process of photography production, which has become a musealia, an object of research and cognition. The photographic heritage constitutes a significant part of the visual heritage preserved by museums, archives and other institutions, which does not lose its relevance and public interest. The examination and description of diverse old photographic technologies create a number of difficulties for investigators, and preservation of unsustainable photographic material requires enormous efforts, practical and theoretical experience.
